MOTHERS' MEMOIRS
Hello All! I am interested in organizing a group of women who would like to put together a performance piece for Mother's Day. It would be focused on personal experiences of motherhood - how motherhood has, shaped, inspired, frustrated you, etc.
I have been involved with the production of the Vagina Memoirs for the past two years. Last year I co-coordinated the performance, which was performed at The Connection space. I would really enjoy being a part of a similar performance based on mother's experiences in honor of Mother's Day. I imagine it would be an inspiring performance.
Creating and performing memoirs requires NO experience. When we did our performance, the women involved did not have previous writing or performing experience. We used various writing exercises and activities to spark our creative juices and to help us create the memoir we decided to perform. Once we decided on the memoir (many of us wrote more than one) we supported one another to fine tune the pieces. We practiced reading our pieces aloud in front of one another and receiving feedback if desired. It was a very fun and empowering experience for all of us.
For the Memoirs we met once a week for approximately 3 hours for about 2 1/2 months before the performance. So that's about the kind of commitment it would be, however, it would really be up to the women involved how you want to do it.
Since I am not a mother myself I would not participate in your meetings, but rather would lend my support with ideas for free-writes and activities to get the writing process started, as well as handle logistics like venues, publicity, etc.
I'm really excited about this idea and would love to hear from anyone that is interested asap so that meeting could get started by March for a performance in May.
Please email me with any comments, ideas, thoughts or concerns at weekss2@cc.wwu.edu or call me at 360-319-1413.
I look forward to hearing from you.
With excitement ~
